NRSC5-DUI: An Updated NRSC-5 HD Radio Decoder for RTL-SDR (2024)

Recently we've seen on GitHub the release of NRSC5-DUI, a fork of NRSC5-GUI which was the first fully functional RTL-SDR compatible HD Radio decoder that we posted about back in 2017. HD Radio is a digital broadcast protocol replacement for analogue broadcast FM. It is only used in North America and is easily recognized as the two rectangular blocks on either side of a broadcast FM station signal on a spectrum analyzer/waterfall display.
According to a Reddit post by u/andrewfer000, NRSC5-DUI includes several upgrades from prior forks, including "better audio processing, better channel switcher, more station information, the option to pull album art from Discogs (currently broken due to Discogs anti-bot), better map displays, cleaner code, and optimizations for Python 3.9".
If listening to audio is not your thing, we also wanted to note that HD radio stations operated by iHeatMedia broadcast live traffic and weather radar data within their HD radio signal as well. With NRSC5-DUI this can be easily decoded and plotted on a map.
When listening to radio stations operated by iHeartMedia, you may view live traffic maps and weather radar. The images are typically sent every few minutes and will fill the tab area once received, processed, and loaded. Clicking the Map Viewer button on the toolbar will open a larger window to view the maps at full size. The weather radar information from the last 12 hours will be stored and can be played back by selecting the Animate Radar option. The delay between frames (in seconds) can be adjusted by changing the Animation Speed value. Other stations provide Navteq/HERE navigation information... it's on the TODO 'like to have' list.

Would be nice if all this could be built into a simple Windows EXE file so I don’t need to worry about Linux and compiling the program.

I think HDRadio is a way forward for the broadcast industry. Sadly, most of that industry would rather just wither away and die. On AM, they could make real improvements if they used HDRadio, particularly if they choose MA3 mode (no analog at all) … but to the MW DXers delight, the industry will not. Too bad – it just means that most AM stations days are numbered (and the number is probably less than 1000 for many of them).
Regardless … this software is cool! Sadly, though, I don’t have a Linux system at home to run it on. Has anyone tried to compile this in MS’ Windows Susbsystem for Linux (“WSL”)? I have that and it’s a great way to have most of the benefits of a real computer while retaining the ability to run the good amateur radio and scanner software … but would WSL even see the devices that NRSC5-DUI needs much less be able to use them?
NRSC5-DUI is a graphical interface for nrsc5. It makes it easy to play your favorite FM HD radio stations using an RTL-SDR or SDRPlay dongle. It will also display weather radar and traffic maps found on most iHeart radio stations.
RTL-SDR stands for "Realtek Software Defined Radio," which is a low-cost hardware device that can be used as a radio receiver for a wide range of frequencies.

To get the most enjoyment out of RTL-SDR you will need a decent antenna. Our packages that come with the dipole antenna set are a great start. Be sure to get them up high and outside (during good weather only) for best results.
The easiest transmission to receive is around 137 MHz, and to receive this signal a simple V-Dipole or more advanced QFH antenna can be used. It also transmits in the L-band, and a small 60cm+ dish can be used to receive it with motorized or hand tracking.
While your home or car radio is designed to tune traditional AM or FM, an SDR dongle that you attach to your computer through your USB port can tune — with the appropriate software — shortwave, police, aircraft, or even CB radio channels.
Advanced SDRs allow users to monitor the spectrum environment, visualize its usage for strategic decision-making, and geolocate RFI signals of interest that jam or interfere with military PACE plans. For EW and SIGINT operators, SDRs enable more sensors to be placed across the theater, thus increasing RF coverage.
It is mostly used in mobile communications, research and development, and military projects. A typical SDR setup involves an RF front-end connected to a computer that will perform the conversions from analog to digital, and the inverse for receiving or sending signals, respectively.
The downsides of the RTL-SDR is that it can't transmit and that the tuner range usually stops before the commonly used 2.4GHz band. Once you get into the higher-end radios, you not only get transmit capabilities, but also a wider tuner range and sample rate.
